4 Cases of Cerebral Cysticercosis with Psychiatric Symptoms


Abstract
Brain infestation by Cysticercus cellulosae, the larval form of Taenia solium, is a common disorder in Korea. Even though there were a lot of literature which described the neurocysticercosis in the aspects of neurology and parasitology, there were few article in the area of psychiatric problems. Therefore, the authers describe the psychiatrically hospitalized 4 cases of psycho-neurocysticercosis including the particular emphases of the use of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and computed tomography for the diagnosis of cerebral cysticercosis and the availability of selecting a solitary method of praziquantel or a combination of praziquantel and steroids by the level of consciousness, the site of lesion, size and number of larval form of Taenia solium, and clinical patterns for the treatment of cerebral cysticercosis. Finally physicians and psychiatrists should be aware of the syndromes elicited by laral form of Taenia solium and should always include them in their differential diagnosis of psychiatric illnesses.
